2022-2028 Six-Year Capital Plan

May 17, 2021

VCU’s Board of Visitors approved the 2022-2028 Six-Year Capital Plan in May 2021 which prioritizes projects identified by the ONE VCU Master Plan. Every two years, the VCU Board of Visitors examines capital projects based on progress and new information. The capital plan includes projects that will be implemented over the next six years and potential funding sources based on the priorities outlined in both the Quest 2025: Together We Transform strategic plan and the ONE VCU Master Plan.

The 2022-2028 Six-Year Capital Plan actualizes key projects designed for university and health system spaces that align with VCU’s mission and strategic goals. The capital plan will reinforce innovation and interdisciplinary achievements, strengthen learning and lived experience on campus, support local partnerships, enhance the patient experience, and better serve the VCU and Richmond communities.

The plan features:

    • A nationally-prominent arts and innovation corridor with a new Arts and Innovation Building optimizing VCU’s renowned performing arts programs by bringing them together under one roof and a student gallery, adjacent to the Institute for Contemporary Art, providing exhibit space accessible to the larger VCU and Richmond communities.
    • Classrooms, labs and common spaces will be incorporated into the Interdisciplinary Classroom and Lab Building and STEM Building offering modern spaces for learning. Additionally, a new Student Commons, new centrally-located Welcome Center and new recreational facilities will support student life and community engagement.
    • Housing and retail spaces will be incorporated into the updated Honors Housing that will include additional beds, gathering space and positive impacts associated with campus-managed housing.
    • Athletics housed in an off-campus Athletic Village, with new sports fields and facilities, will return real-estate to on-campus learning and allow for future youth programming.
    • Iconic greens within Monroe Park and MCV Campuses will invite passive recreation and provide open spaces for gathering and wellness for students, faculty, staff, patients and visitors.
    • Front doors will enhance VCU’s appearance as an urban campus through improvements to front doors and streetscapes and offer an interconnectedness with green space.
    • A new health sciences campus will consist of a new School of Dentistry Building in support of clinical productivity and maximize care for underserved populations in need of dental care within the Richmond community. The Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Building, Library and Innovation Center will serve as a central hub for the MCV Campus and a connector through an expanded bridge system that links education, research and patient care.
